Rooster Table Runner

Pieced and raw-edge appliqué

 Materials needed: (there is an inch or two added for straightening fabrics)

a)       54x 20 inches - Dark Fabric for the backing

b)       54x20 inches for 80/20 batting (or a 1/4 thin polyester batting will work just fine- your preference) 

c)       11x42 inches - Binding

d)       39x13 inches - Light  Fabric (for the Rooster block background)

e)       10x15 inches - Red Coordinating fabric for the boarder of Rooster Blocks

f)       15x42inches - Light and dark mixed pattern for the sashing and boarders

g)       11x25inches - Dark fabric for the Rooster body

h)       11x25inches -  Dark and light mix for the tail feathers

i)        15x5inches - Red for the comb and the wattle

j)        3x3 inch block - Orange for the beak

k)       2x2 inch block Black (for eye ball- i didn't use it- optional- however it is in the pattern you will be downloading)

l)        Sewing machine

m)     black thread

n)       Iron on fusible web  (i.e. Wonder -Under, Heat and Bond, or your favorite)

o)       iron and pressing cloth

Tip:  Pre-wash and iron all fabric

• While pressing use starch.
•  I like to use a heavy starch- it helps to stop any stretching, pulling and shifting-  (Just be  careful not to iron in any stretches or pull your fabric while ironing)

LETS BEGIN

1.      Download and print out the Rooster Pattern from  Fatcatpatterns.com

2.      Trace your rooster pattern onto the paper side of your fusible webbing (i.e. Wonder Under or Heat and Bond)  

3.      Iron on,-your now marked- fusible webbing to the BACKSIDE of your fabric

·   11x25inches - Dark fabric for the Rooster body

·   11x25inches -  Dark and light mix for the tail feathers

·   15x5inches - Red for the comb and the wattle

·   3x3 inch block - Orange for the beak

·   2x2 inch block Black (for eye ball- i didn't use it- optional- however it is in the pattern you will be downloading)

You may rather...

after tracing on the pattern to the paper side of the fusible webbing cut out the pieces,  then arrange them on the fabric,  press(according to the webbing instructions) and then lastly, cut out all pieces of the Rooster-   

4.       Cut out your rooster, tail feathers, comb and wattle.  (I didn't use or cut out my eyeball- simply 'cause it was so small I didn't feel like I needed it- my own personal taste)

1.     CUTTING

a)     Cut your Center Blocks

·        cut 3 equal blocks  - 12.5 inches x 12.5 inches  -   using    d.) 39x13 inches - Light  Fabric

b)     Cut your red boarders

·        cut strips  -  1.5 inches wide x 15 inches long    -   using    e.)10x15 inches - Red Coordinating fabric

c)     Cut your sashing and outer boarder

·        Cut strips  -  2.5 inches wide by 42-45inches (whatever the width of fabric off bolt happens to measure) using    f.)15x42inches - Light and dark mixed printed pattern

d)     Cut your binding 

·        Cut strips measuring 2.5 inches wide x 42-45(width of fabric off the bolt)  - using  c.) 11x42 inches - Binding      sew them together to make one long strip- fold in half and press/iron to now measure 1& 3/4 inch wide x 150+ inches long

2.      IRONING

Arrange the Rooster layering carefully-

·         position body first  

·        put in place the Tail feathers (butting the pieces up next to one another but not overlapping)

·        place beak  partially under body

·        IRON   THESE   INTO   PLACE   FIRST

·        layer Comb and wattle next

·        IRON

3.      APPLIQUE

·        Select your method of appliqué stitch ( I like to use a "Blanket Stitch")

·        Use the right color of thread- I used black for all pieces except for the beak  - I used an orange colored thread)

·       Sewing and stitch length using the Blanket Stitch on my Brother:

Ø       Starting with the body and tail feathers:   length 3.5  width 3.5

Ø       legs and feet:   length 2    width 1.5

Ø       Comb and Wattle:   length 2    width 1.5

Tip:  Adjust your stitch width and length

While in and around small areas of your appliqué pattern, adjust the length and width of your blanket stitch, it will increase your flexibility around corners and other tight areas.

4.      SEWING

·        Border Rooster Blocks with red - butt up your edges or miter the corners

·       Square up blocks

·       Sew on the sashing between the blocks and sew blocks

·       square up or trim

·       Border entire runner  Mitering your corners

·       Press and square up corners if necessary

·       Layer with batting and backing  (I like to use a quilt basting spray adhesive to "stick" my layers together this minimizes any shifting that can take place during quilting on such a small project on my long arm)

·       quilt in the manner you like (either by the domestic /home sewing machine or by your industrial long arm quilting machine)

·       If you choose to use your home sewing machine remember to use a walking foot for the straight lines and the "free motion" hoop-like foot for the rooster)

·       Don't forget that a decorative stitch is always a nice touch
